Meet Joe Callinan

Running For Rohnert Park City Council,

District 5 (D Section, F Section & West of Hwy. 101)

Rohnert Park BORN & RAISED

Joe was born and raised in Rohnert Park. He met his wife, Janet Rodriguez, while attending Rohnert Park Junior High School and the rest, as they say, is history. Joe and Janet raised their five beautiful children (Joe, Jr., Jordan, Jesse, Johnny & Jenna) in Rohnert Park, and they are the grandparents of 14  grandchildren.  And just recently, Joe and Janet celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.

A History of SERVICE

Joe's parents, Pete and Greta Callinan moved to Rohnert Park in 1959 when the oldest of their six children was eleven. They bought a brand new house on Arlen Drive for $12,500 ~ right across the street from Alicia Park and just down the street from John Reed Elementary School. Joe's desire to serve in Rohnert Park is genetic. His father, Pete, was the first mayor of Rohnert Park and, in 1962, was hired as our first city manager. His mother, Greta, served on the PTA, local women's groups, and other service organizations. Joe attended John Reed Elementary School, Rohnert Park Junior High, and graduated from Rancho Cotate High School.

Putting Experience To Work

The recent wildfires and COVID-19 have become major concerns for everyone. The safety and health of our residents are a priority for prior Mayor Joe Callinan. Callinan has collaborated with Rohnert Park business owners to bring forth ideas to keep local businesses open and their employees employed. Joe understands the impact of COVID-19 and wildfires have had on our community and will continue to look for solutions to help our community recover financially while also protecting our health. He continues to focus on these and other key priorities.

Accomplishments

Housing Affordability Is Essential

Joe Callinan has always been a proponent of bringing housing to our community. Like himself, he hopes all people who grew up here can return to Rohnert Park and have the ability to have a home to raise their children here. Joe continues to support the availability of all housing of all types, from multifamily rental units, and townhouses to single-family homes. He also encouraged homes to be built in the new K and W neighborhoods.

Improving our parks & recreational areas

Two-time Mayor Callinan doesn't just talk about providing recreational opportunities he puts his words into action...

  • Alicia Park: Supported the upgrades of the soccer fields.

  • Benicia Park: Improved the baseball field.

  • Caterpillar Park: Funded new playground equipment.

  • Dorotea Park: Improved the play area and baseball diamond along with upgraded public restrooms.

  • Sunrise Park: Upgraded soccer fields.

  • Twin Creek Park (K Section): Supported the new hospitality room, and baseball and soccer field areas.

Protecting our open

spaces from sprawl

Previous Mayor Joe Callinan was instrumental in creating the new Urban Growth Boundaries (UGB) recently reauthorized by voters in overwhelming numbers. The UGB protects our open spaces and surrounding agricultural lands from the pressures of newer development.
